20 Martin Luther Quotes — 500 Years Later

October 31st of this year marks 500 years since Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the church at Wittenberg, Germany.  He went on to lead a revolt against the Catholic church that resulted in many of the Protestant denominations that we have today. In remembrance of this historic event, I am posting 20 famous Martin Luther quotes.

5 Quotes about prayer:

“Pray like it all depends on God, then when you are done, work like it depends on you.”
“Pray, and let God worry.”
“Prayer is a strong wall and fortress of the church; it is a goodly Christian weapon.”
“The fewer the words, the better the prayer.”
“I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.”

5 Quotes about Christian life:

“We are saved by faith alone, but a faith that saves is never alone.”
“A Christian is never in a state of completion but always in a process of becoming.”
“God does not need your good works, but your neighbor does.”
“I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.”
“Faith is a living and unshakable confidence, a belief in the grace of God so assured that a man would die a thousand deaths for its sake.”

4 Quotes about marriage:

“Let the wife make the husband glad to come home, and let him make her sorry to see him leave”
“There is no more lovely, friendly, and charming relationship, communion, or company than a good marriage.”
“The highest gift and favor of God is a pious, kind, godly, and domestic wife, with whom thou mayest live peaceably, and to whom thou mayest intrust all thy possessions, yea, thy body and thy life.”
“God has set the type of marriage everywhere throughout the creation. Every creature seeks its perfection in another. The very heavens and earth picture it to us.”

5 Quotes about daily living:

“Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.”
“Nothing good ever comes of violence.”
“Peace, if possible, truth at all costs.”
“Every man must do two things alone.  He must do his own believing, and his own dying.”
“Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul; it is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.”

Perhaps, for me, Martin Luther’s most memorable quote was the one he uttered when asked to recant his beliefs and his published writings…

Most Memorable Quote:

“I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe.  Here I stand.  I can do no other.  God help me.  Amen.”

May we all have the courage and boldness to take our stands on God’s word alone when and if we find it necessary!
