Paper Plate Heart Basket

This paper plate heart basket is super cute for kids to make to give away for Valentine’s Day or to hold their Valentine’s Day cards.   Since this Sunday is Valentine’s Day, I will be using this for a Sunday School craft.  I teach 2 and 3 year olds, so I will make the baskets ahead, and then let the children decorate them with stickers.  This craft can be adapted for different ages with appropriate amounts of help.

Supplies:

  • Supplies Needed

    Supplies Needed

  • 2 – dessert size paper plates– not plastic  (I used 2 different colors for each heart.  Don’t you love the plate with the pink design?)
  • 1- 12″ piece of ribbon for handle
  • stickers, buttons, beads, glitter, washi tape, etc. to decorate
  • stapler
  • glue
  • decorative edge scissors
  • hole punch

Instructions:

paper plate heart 6

  • Trim outer edge of both plates with decorative scissors.  Pinking shears can work fine for this.  I just followed the first crease line on the plate to keep my circle shape.

paper plate heart 5

  • Gently bend the outer rims of both plates back to flatten
  • Fold the plates in half with the colored side out

  • Combine the 2 folded plates to form a heart.
  • Staple the bottom point of the hearts with one staple.   Doing this staple first helps secure the plates and makes the top staples easier.
  • Staple the tops of the heart together with one staple on each side.
  • If you desire, you can glue the edges of the plates together now, but I felt that the staples were sufficient.

  • Use a hole punch to punch a hole about a quarter of an inch from the top of each plate, right on the fold.
  • Thread the ribbon through each hole.
  • Pull the ribbon out and add optional bead or button, then tie a knot   Repeat for the other side.
  • Now, your basic heart basket is done!  Decorate it as you please.

For Sunday School, I am printing verses on hearts for them to place in their basket (along with a small prize and treat that I will give them.)  We have been studying the 10 commandments, so for this Sunday, I will print from Matthew 22:37 and 39:

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart

You shall love your neighbor as yourself

You can choose any verses about love that you want, and put them on hearts to put in their baskets!

May your Valentine’s Day and every day be filled with love of God.

With Joy,

Kathleen
