Cup Shaker Craft for VBS

This cup shaker craft was inexpensive, easy, and really fun at one Mexico VBS!

Materials:

  1.  Small clear or white plastic Cups (4 to 6 oz.)
  2. Plastic beads
  3. Washi tape
  4. String or yarn
  5. Scissors
  6. Curling ribbon
  7. Permanent markers
  8. Stickers

Instructions:

Each child gets two cups.  Fill one of them about 1/3 to 1/2 with beads.  (You can also use beans, rice, popcorn, or bells.  We used plastic beads because they were cheaper than bells and looked pretty through the clear plastic.  I also didn’t want to use any kind of food, since that might seem too extravagant to a family that doesn’t have enough food.  You can adapt any of these items to fit your project.)

Place the other cup on top of the first cup and tape together with the Washi tape.  (It is helpful to have something to measure the circumference of your cups before you cut your tape, like a string or yarn.  If you have a large group making these at a VBS, you can have one or two helpers pre-cutting the tape to length.)  You can also use duct tape for this.  It is better at sticking in general, but should be cut in narrower widths, and it is somewhat more difficult for the children to work with.

Curl ribbon and tape to the ends.  (Leaders can also pre-curl some ribbons for the younger children to use.)

Decorate with permanent markers or stickers.

Here is a very brief video clip of our kids at the VBS singing and showing just how much they enjoyed this craft!
